  53. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS for WINDOWS 3.1

  57. To install Hewlett-Packard HPPCL5E printer driver version
  58. 31.V1.27 for Windows 3.1:
  59.  
  60. 1.  Choose the "Control Panel" from the Main Group in Program
  61.     Manager.
  62. 2.  Choose the "Printers" icon from the Control Panel window.
  63. 3.  The Printers dialog box appears. Choose the "Add>>" button.
  64. 4.  The "List of Printers" dialog box appears. Select "Install
  65.     Unlisted or Updated Printer" (first line in list).
  66. 5.  Choose the "Install" button.
  67. 6.  Insert the driver disk with the HPPCL5E printer driver
  68.     into your flexible disk drive and specify the corresponding
  69.     drive, OR enter the drive and directory where the driver
  70.     files are stored.
  71. 7.  At the "Add Unlisted or Updated Printer" dialog box,
  72.     highlight one of the available printers: "HP LaserJet 4/4M",
  73.     "HP LaserJet 4L", "HP LaserJet 4ML", "HP LaserJet 4P/4MP",
  74.     "HP LaserJet 4Si/4Si MX" and press [Enter]. If you are asked
  75.     whether or not to install the new HPPCL5E3.DLL file, press
  76.     the "Yes" button to continue the installation.
  77. 8.  Choose the "Connect" button.
  78. 9.  Highlight the correct printer port from the "Ports:" list
  79.     box and press [Enter].
  80. 10. Choose the "Setup" button.
  81. 11. Make any necessary changes in the Printer Setup screen to
  82.     reflect your printer's configuration.
  83. 12. Choose OK.
  84. 13. Choose the "Set as Default Printer" button.

  89. FEATURES of the HP LASERJET 4 FAMILY PRINTER DRIVER

  93. The Hewlett-Packard LASERJET 4 HPPCL5E PRINTER DRIVER version
  94. 31.V1.27 includes support for the HP LaserJet 4/4M, 4L, 4ML,
  95. 4P/4MP, & 4Si/4Si MX printers and the following features:
  96.  
  97. Support for Graphics Quality.
  98.     For the LaserJet 4/4M, 4Si/4Si MX, and 4P/4MP at 600 dpi mode
  99.     the driver supports 600, 300, and 150 dpi.  For the LaserJet
  100.     4/4M, 4L, 4ML, 4Si/4Si MX, and 4P/4MP, at 300 dpi mode the
  101.     driver supports 300, 150, and 75 dpi. The actual graphics
  102.     resolution settings are denoted by the descriptive terms of
  103.     High, Medium, and Low rather than the actual dpi.
  104.  
  105. Support for the internal Intellifont typefaces.
  106.     All the internal Intellifont typefaces in the HP LaserJet
  107.     4/4M, 4L, 4ML, 4Si/4Si MX, 4P/4MP printers are supported in
  108.     the 19U symbol set.
  109.  
  110. Support for HP-GL/2
  111.     Support for HP-GL/2 is in the HPPCL5E PRINTER DRIVER. Under
  112.     the Options Dialog in the Printer Setup, an option of
  113.     "Graphics Mode" is available. Two options are present:
  114.     HP-GL/2 or Raster. The first choice enables both HP-GL/2 and
  115.     raster printing which optimizes print performance. The second
  116.     choice uses raster only. The default graphics mode is set to
  117.     raster for the HP LaserJet 4L. The default mode is set to
  118.     HP-GL/2 for the HP LaserJet 4/4M, 4ML, 4Si/4Si MX, and 4P/MP.
  119.     Default settings for "Graphics Mode" optimize print speed for
  120.     the given printer.
  121.  
  122.     If you encounter print difficulties in HP-GL/2 Graphics Mode,
  123.     it is recommended that you change the mode to Raster and try
  124.     your print job again. Additional information on this topic
  125.     may be found in the help files that accompany this driver.
  126.     Choose Help from the driver dialog screens or the HP font
  127.     installer screens to access the HELP information.

  129. Support for EconoMode
  130.  (Supported by the LaserJet 4L, 4ML, and 4P/4MP)
  131.     Support for EconoMode is in printer driver versions 31.V1.20
  132.     or later within the Options Dialog.  There are two options
  133.     available, ON or OFF. With EconoMode enabled the output will
  134.     resemble draft mode, using fewer dots in order to conserve
  135.     toner.

  137. Support for Print Density
  138.   (Supported by the LaserJet 4L, 4ML, and 4P/4MP)
  139.     Print density support is provided in the Options Dialog.
  140.     Adjust the density of the printer according to the desired
  141.     density.  The density range is one (lightest) to five
  142.     (darkest).
  143.  
  144. Dialog Support for REt
  145.    Another feature added to the Option Dialog is the REt
  146.    (Resolution Enhancement technology) box.
  147.    The options here are:
  148.       - HP LaserJet 4L, 4ML, and 4P/4MP
  149.            Light, Medium, Dark, and OFF
  150.       - HP LaserJet 4/4M
  151.            Printer Default, Light, Medium, Dark, and Off
  152.       - HP LaserJet 4Si/4Si MX
  153.            Printer Default, ON, and OFF

  155. Dialog Support for Resource Saving
  156.  (Supported only by LaserJet 4Si/4Si MX)
  157.     This feature, added to the main setup dialog box, allows the
  158.     user to tell the printer driver how much memory is set aside
  159.     for each printer personality (PCL and PostScript).  This
  160.     memory is used for saving printer resources between printer
  161.     language switching. The range is 0KB to 99900KB.
  162.  
  163. Version Information Resources
  164.     This feature, in printer driver versions 31.V1.20 and later,
  165.     is added to the printer driver and its dynamic link
  166.     libraries. This helps to eliminate a possible mismatch of
  167.     driver and driver resource files when installing previous
  168.     drivers. If a potential mismatch is detected during driver
  169.     installation, a dialog box that contains a warning is
  170.     displayed.

  172. Custom Media Size
  173.     Custom Media is also supported by this driver for the HP
  174.     LaserJet 4ML and 4P/4MP. The size of the custom media in most
  175.     cases must be set in both the application's page setup and
  176.     the driver setup.  For more information about minimum and
  177.     maximum page size, see your users manual.

  186. Cartridge Support
  187.     This driver does not have built-in support for HP font
  188.     cartridges. Font cartridge support is still available by:
  189.  
  190.     1) Installing the fonts for the font cartridge from the
  191.        autofont support disk shipped with the font cartridge
  192.     2) North American customer can contact Hewlett-Packard's
  193.        Driver Distribution Center.

  198.     4) Downloading the PCM (printer cartridge metric) files
  199.        from the HP Periperals Forum library on CompuServe. The
  200.        filename for the PCM files is L4PCM.EXE.

  202.     After extracting the files, the PCM files can be installed
  203.     from the HP Font Installer which is accessed from the
  204.     "Control Panel", "Printers", "Setup", "Fonts...", "Add
  205.     Fonts..." option in Windows 3.1. Detailed installation
  206.     instructions are included with the PCM files.

  208. 300 DPI Compatibility
  209.     Additional compatibility has been added to this driver to
  210.     insure compatibility between documents printed with this
  211.     driver and documents printed with the HP LaserJet III Family
  212.     drivers. This compatibility is automatically enabled when a
  213.     document is printed with the resolution field set to 300 DPI.

  233. Aldus PageMaker 5.0
  234.     When using this driver with Aldus PageMaker 5.0, users may
  235.     experience problems with rotated images printing as tiled
  236.     squares on LaserJet 4 family printers (LaserJet 4/4M, 4L
  237.     and 4Si/4Si MX) that do not support Windows Raster
  238.     Operations (ROPS).
